Are you interested in joining forces with an exceptional group of people to stand up for children’s rights? Do you have great communication skills and the ability to motivate others? Are you keen to get stuck into some strategic grassroots advocacy to end child detention in Australia? Join us and become part of an ECDC electorate action team!

The following key roles described below will play a vital role ensuring the momentum of the ECDC electorate action team are maintained and well managed in one of our 10 key electorates across Australia.

You will be part of an exceptional group of people standing up for children’s rights, the End Child Detention Coalition (ECDC), made up of 23 member organisations around Australia who are mobilising to make a difference for children. Together you will help lead efforts to build support within your electorate and expand our community and supporter base, working to build bi-partisan support to end child detention in Australia.

JOIN THE ECDC ACTION TEAMS

As a member of an ECDC action team, you will be responsible for working within one our lead electorates to coordinate advocacy, organise training and support ongoing local media  engagement (both mainstream press and social media). You will be guided by our ECDC government relations strategy, our political advisors, and our ECDC Executive Team based around Australia.  

The key group roles for each electorate action team include:

1. Electorate Team Coordinator
2. Media & Communications Officer
3. Advocacy & Community Engagement Officer

Your passion is the most important element for your success in this role. These are voluntary positions requiring a minimum of 4 – 6 hours per week commitment until the next election (estimated to be in early 2019).

ECDC Electorate Action Group Roles

 

Electorate Team Coordinator (Volunteer)

The Electorate Team Coordinator will play a vital role ensuring the momentum of the action team is maintained and well managed. In this role you will lead ECDC efforts to build support within your electorate and expand the ECDC community and supporter base.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Lead the action team to advocate and engage with MPs and Candidates with the aim to build bipartisan support on ending child detention in Australia.
  • Create and manage partnerships with community groups seeking to join the ECDC and /or collaborate on joint initiatives with the ECDC in your electorate.
  • Support the media team to engage your electorate through various media channels, including social media.
  • Work closely with the Advocacy and Community Engagement Coordinator to create, facilitate and moderate ECDC workshops on community mobilisation and advocacy training.
  • Represent ECDC at community events, branch meetings.
  • Provide general support to core members of your ECDC Electorate Action Group
  • Oversee the coordination of two ECDC events your lead electorate this 2017 (to be run in close collaboration with members of the electorate team).

Key Selection Criteria

  • Passionate about making a difference for children seeking asylum and migrants in Australia
  • Excellent organisational and people management skills, proven team coordination and delegation skills.
  • Strong work ethic: motivation, enthusiasm and flexibility.
  • Experience in facilitation of training workshops

Media & Communications Officer (Volunteer)

The Media & Communications Officer will play a vital role in communication support for the targeted engagement within their target electorate.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Produce the monthly electorate newsletter
  • Maintain and grow the ECDC electorate mailing list
  • Implement the ECDC Communications Strategy by producing social media content for the organizational accounts on Facebook and Twitter and updating the ECDC website as required.
  • Work with ECDC members from both within and surrounding electorates to produce additional ECDC communications materials that promote positive stories for individuals from asylum seeker or refugee backgrounds.
  • Work closely with the core members of your electorate team to grow community support for the ECDC and awareness of the issue of immigration detention of children.
  • Assist with the coordination of two ECDC events your lead electorate this 2017 (to be run in close collaboration with members of the electorate team).

Key Selection Criteria

  • Passionate about making a difference for children seeking asylum and migrants in Australia
  • Experience with social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) and strong computer skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in communications work, including (but not limited to) newsletter production, blog and report writing.

Advocacy & Community Engagement Officer (Volunteer)

The Advocacy & Community Engagement Officer will play the vital role of developing the advocacy skills of ECDC members, as well as engaging community support through community mobilization workshops and running of community events. Each team may have more than one officer, given the large number of responsibilities listed below.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Mapping relevant stakeholders within your electorate including MPs, local candidates and community groups.
  • Develop and maintain a relationship with your local MP, local candidates and relevant stakeholders. This will include arranging face to face meetings and managing mail and email correspondence with MP and Candidate offices.
  • Provide training to other ECDC members and supporters on how to engage with MPs, candidates and relevant stakeholders within your electorate.
  • Working closely with other electorate Advocacy Leads and the ECDC Executive to share updates on new relevant information for the wider campaign.
  • Support the coordination of two ECDC events your lead electorate this 2017 (to be run in close collaboration with members of the electorate team).
  • Building relationships with key members, allies and community groups.

Key Selection Criteria

  • Passionate about making a difference for children seeking asylum and migrants in Australia
  • Experience working to build bipartisan support within your community on an key issue
  • Excellent communicator with a strong work ethic: motivation, enthusiasm and flexibility.
  • Experience in facilitation of training workshops
